“What makes me happy? Smoking weed.”
“I’m 77 and I wish I was 21.”
“Why is that?”
“I started drinking when I was 21 and for 7 years I lived in The Bowery*. If I could be 21 again, I’d do it differently.”
*From the 1940s-1970s the Bowery was known as NYC’s ‘skid row’; an area frequented mostly by alcoholics and homeless people.
“She’s very understanding.”
“She keeps me level.”
And no one watching could figure out what exactly was happening and none of us asked because we knew that knowing the message might make it all less interesting.
